Urban Renewal Authority 2018-19 Annual Report

135 (expressed in Hong Kong Dollars) NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2. Significant accounting policies (Continued) (i) Financial assets and liabilities (Continued) (ii) Policy applicable prior to 1 April 2018 The Group classifies its financial assets in the following categories: held-to-maturity investments, investments at fair value through profit or loss and loans and receivables. The classification depends on the purpose for which the financial assets were acquired. Management determine the classification of its financial assets at initial recognition. (i) Held-to-maturity investments Debt securities that the Group has the positive ability and intention to hold to maturity are classified as held-to-maturity investments. Held-to-maturity investments are stated at amortised cost less impairment losses, if any. Interest income from held-to-maturity investments is recognised in profit or loss as part of “other income, net” using the effective interest method. (ii) Investments at fair value through profit or loss Investments at fair value through profit or loss are financial assets designated at fair value through profit or loss on initial recognition or held for trading. Assets in this category are classified as current assets. Investments at fair value through profit or loss are subsequently carried at fair value. Gains or losses arising from changes in the fair value of the “investments at fair value through profit or loss” category are presented in profit or loss within “other income, net” in the period in which they arise. Interest income from investments at fair value through profit or loss is recognised in profit or loss as part of “other income, net” using the effective interest method. (iii) Loans and receivables Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market. They arise when the Group provides money, goods or services directly to a debtor with no intention of trading the receivable. They are included in current assets, except for those with maturities greater than 12 months after the end of the reporting period, which are classified as non-current assets. Purchases and sales of financial assets are recognised on the trade-date – the date on which the Group commits to purchase or sell the asset. Investments at FVPL are initially recognised at fair value and transaction costs are expensed in profit or loss. Financial assets are derecognised when the rights to receive cash flows from the investments have expired or have been transferred and the Group has transferred substantially all risks and rewards of ownership. Financial liabilities are recognised initially at fair value, net of transaction costs incurred. Financial liabilities are subsequently carried at amortised cost; any difference between the proceeds (net of transaction costs) and the redemption value is recognised in profit or loss over the period of the borrowings using the effective interest method.
